The controversy surrounding Emory Conrad Malick, Sunbury’s first “black” aviator

By: Amy L Thomas
– The Sunbury American – Harrisburg100

A controversy began when the Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine published an article in March 2011 entitled “The Unrecognized First”. The article explains that Mary Groce, a descendant of Emory Conrad Malick, found a picture of her great uncle and believed he appeared black. Upon seeing his picture, Groce and her cousin, Aileen exclaimed “Oh my God, he’s black” and “This explains my brother’s blond afro!” The black and white picture shows a man with a cap covering his hair, flying an early airplane. The article’s picture closely matches a picture of Emory shown in an advertisement with the label “E C Malick” for the Curtiss School of Aviation Class of 1912, seeming to confirm the identification of the individual in the photo. But no one authenticated the claim and there was not even a claim of a family tradition of being black. In fact, the descendant stated, “I was never told about Emory or my mixed heritage.

The fact that Emory was a pioneer aviator is not in doubt. There are plenty of documents showing his attendance at the Curtiss Aviation School, visiting his parents in Northumberland County, and performing aerial exhibitions in the area. His exploits are described in the local newspapers for approximately 19 years. But all contemporaneous records have shown that Emory and other members of the extended family were indeed, white. Of course, having the first black anything would be an honor for any family to claim, but it would need to be based on established facts and documentation to have any value.

The claim that Emory Conrad Malick was the First Black Aviator might have gone unchallenged if not for a book published in 2014 by black aviation historian, Guy E Franklin, titled “Emory Conrad Malick: A Closer Look”. In Franklin’s book, Guy methodically outlines the case that Emory was in all actuality, white. He even included research on Emory’s membership in the The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, which was limited to white members at that time.

Multiple contemporaneous documents show not only that Emory was white, but that he had a “ruddy complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes”. The class picture alone from the Curtiss Aviation School would not prove that the written record is incorrect and that Emory was black or that perhaps that he may have been pretending to be white. Emory his parents, grandparents, and other ancestors as well as siblings all self-identified as being white.

Darius Malick (father) E C Malick (middle) Susan Conrad (mother)

The Sunbury Daily Item on 16 Jun 2013, added the claim that “His Malick ancestors, already of mixed European and African heritage, came to Pennsylvania from Germany in the 1700s.” To date, there has been no record found of any proof of mixed African heritage in the Malick family in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Please note, the people of Northumberland County did not nor would not care if these pioneers were white or black or members of any other ethnic group. But claims of this importance require evidence and all the evidence says the Malick families were white (reference 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, etc US census records as well as modern DNA ethnicity reports).

Many Conrad/Malick descendants have completed genetic DNA testing done and they have yet to nd any in this line that show African descent in the ethnicity report. While some African DNA could support this premise, the lack of African DNA, even in trace amounts, suggests that they are not of African descent. In particular, one person who is a descendant of Darius Malick and Susanna Conrad showed no African ancestry in an ancestry.com autosomal test.

Mary Groce with E C Malick Photo
Mary Groce has developed a narrative based off of her interpretation of a photograph and for over a decade has perpetuated said narrative across the country. But she has provided no evidence to support her claims, in fact, the evidence that is available shows her narrative to be false. Her own DNA results, via Ancestry.com, show that she does not possess any genes that can be directly linked to peoples of color from Africa. Her claim that the Malick line of her family, from which she is related to Emory by, was of color, even in part, has never been shown to be factual and is, for all intents and purposes, the ramblings of an individual intent on forcing the world to buy into her story. This goes beyond whether Emory was indeed of color and identi ed as white, like his entire family, because all the evidence shows that he was, in fact, white. Mary Groce has crafted a narrative based on one old photograph and a misconceived notion of racial identity and, as such, must either provide concrete evidence to prove herself in the right, or step aside and allow her Conrad and Malick relatives to tell the true story of Emory.

In conclusion, it seems that Guy Franklin’s investigation and conclusion that Emory was more likely white seems obvious. An independent observer would note that there are no indications anywhere in the record to suggest that Emory in particular or the Darius Malick family in general were black or even of mixed black ancestry. One would expect a high standard of evidence for declaring someone to be the First Black anything. Emory Conrad Malick does not meet this standard. Several museums and other such organizations took Ms. Groce at her word and have embraced the claims without validating the information.
As a distant cousin of Emory C Malick, I myself reached out to Mary Groce asking her to contact me and discuss her claims about Emory, but received no response.

I would like to thank Guy E Franklin, Tim Conrad and the facebook group Tuskegee Airman for all their help and research on this endeavor and all of our continued efforts to correct this claim that Emory Conrad Malick was the first black aviator, for it is an honor that truly belongs to Charles Ward Chappelle who earned a club license in 1911.

Attention Eastern University

Harrisburg, PA – City council turned down the posposal for Eastern University to lease unused space in the City Hall building.

This was an opportunity for the city to rent out space in the basement of the city government property, and Eastern University offered to spend $600,000 on building renovations.

Of the rejected deal, Harrisburg resident Anthony Harrell says: “City Council I am with you on this, the mayor sprung this on you and the citizens, and he already had it set up!”

Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse responded: “We are going to take taxpayer dollars to help fix a building instead of potholes and playgrounds, and to me, it was a no-brainer, and we should have moved forward with a partnership with Eastern.”

Beau Brown, a 17 year commercial real estate veteran says he can help Eastern University find an alternative site.

He was in favor of the proposed deal, and stated in the past that it seemed like Eastern U and the administration worked hard on the feasibility exercise to locate at city hall.

Brown stated that despite prior disagreements with the administration – he believes that he could serve both the client and the city’s interests by finding a site where the city can still benefit directly or indirectly.

This was a clean partnership proposal and it shouldn’t fall to the back burner.

Let’s work together to find a beneficial alternative.

Trump Says: New jobs & lower taxes in Harrisburg; Papenfuse/Hartzler Resist

By: Jansas “Covfefe” Reds

Harrisburg, PA – After an early day trip to Canada to meet with Prime Minister Trudeau, President Trump visited Harrisburg on Wednesday to discuss job creation through his new tax plan. Network host Sean Hannity was also in town to interview the President about his new plan for America.

Trump spoke in front of an audience of roughly 1,000 people, including lots of truckers, against a backdrop of big rigs at a local air plane hangar. Trump pitched a plan that would dramatically cut corporate tax rates from 35 percent to 20 percent, reduce the number of personal income tax brackets and boost the standard deduction.

The meeting also included 50-100 people invited through political and business circles, including David Black and members of CREDC. Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse has been vocally outspoken against the President of the United States.

Is Papenfuse willfully resisting Trump? In the following video, under the guise of a “grassroots” effort, Papenfuse inspired the anti-Trump anarchists who advocate for mob-rule:

Or is Papenfuse being leverage by his boss?

His boss donated half-a-million dollars in campaign contributions (through PAC), and is an influential liberal publisher/real estate developer in the Harrisburg area.

The local developer/publisher bought the election of Papenfuse, Patty Kim, and Cornelius Johnson. He has already returned on his original investment through WCI, and has likely profited significantly from the so-called ‘pay-for-play’ scheme.

Hartzler uses his twitter account and media outlet ‘theBurg‘ to sow discord in America, and to indoctrinate the Harrisburg population by attempting to normalize leftist ideology.

Specifically, Hartzler influences the midtown Harrisburg yuppie crowd, who is 100% complacent in spreading extreme leftist ideology that creates a divide in our nation.

Hartzler regularly cites sources such as ‘State of Resistance’ and ‘The Daily Show’
With no regard for credibility in his sources, on a daily basis the publisher retweets the most trending anti-Trump stories. These postings dictate the narratives that are purveyed by his close followers.

Hartzler qualifies his emotional response to the latest trending anti-Trump narrative “breathtaking.. and true”

Much of the #FakeNews that is purveyed by the anti-Trump resistance is based in partisan opinion, and often the supporting facts in these stories have been debunked by various competing media outlets. Another tactic of these leftist; to develope a false narrative based on a typical daily interaction, then create liberal outrage and backlash.

It has also be suggested by Harrisburg insiders that “TheBurg and it’s 2nd command, Lawrance Binda has accepted the torch passed to it by #FakeNews alpha-dog; Pennlive. Binda consistently imposes his views for himself and his boss as “truth” and believes that Midtown is the center of the universe, where terms for everyone are dictated.”

This liberal media has perverted the mind of many Americans who now believe wholeheartedly in the anti-Trump news, and even network executives are willing to condone violence against Trump supporters:

The leftist controlled media has created a revolution of anarchist who wish to overthrow the government:

The Washington Post has also been a leading source in the leftist war on Trump.

However, more recently The Washington Post has displayed hints of a shifting political culture toward the ‘Make America Great Again’ movement, evident in this recent opinion piece predicting a win for Trump in 2020.

Overwhelming, public opinion stands against the disadvantages of globalization on America, and the MSM is showing signs of beginning to shift towards that pro-national sentiment. Will our local publisher follow suit with the patriotic shift in mainstream media culture? Will Papenfuse and company follow along?

The liberal media covers for scum like this:

Papenfuse with Bill Clinton – birds of a feather..

Hillary Clinton in Dauphin County, PA
Party Kim greets the womanizer in Harrisburg, PA
Shamaine Daniels poses with the womanizer in Harrisburg

Everyone is a Nazi

The actual outcome of the liberal media’s propaganda campaign has yielded unfortunate results in Harrisburg:

Dauphin County released evidence today in case against Harrisburg Mayor’s Senior Advisor

New Report: Property Scandal Involving Jacki Parker

Harrisburg, PA – Rowbottom vs. Singleton Update

Dauphin County released evidence today to the plaintiff, Timothy Rowbottom, in his case against Karl Singleton, Senior Advisor to Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse.

On May 09, 2017, around 9 p.m., the plantiff alleges that Mr. Singleton threatened the man in a physically intimidating manner, and alluded to knowing his home address. This incident occurred in the Harrisburg Hilton Hotel during the 2017 Mayoral debate. Singleton and Rowbottom were both in attendance at the debate event that took place that evening in the 2nd floor Ballroom.

When Rowbottom attempted to serve the Harrisburg Police department today, he was told “No” they can’t accept the supoena.

When asked to put it in writing, HBG PD complied and accepted the supoenas for more evidence.

Harrisburg City Solicitor Neil Grover also attempted to withhold evidence when he aggressively approached the plaintiff in city hall recently.

In a similar politically motivated threat, it’s also been alleged that the defendant Karl Singleton physically threatened Dauphin County Commissioner Jeffrey Haste after an informal meeting several years ago. That particular incident was broken up by other county officials who were present.

SCANDAL: Harrisburg City Officials named in alleged Coordinated Property Subversion Scheme

Initial Report on Lawsuit against HBG Mayor’s Senior Advisor

Harrisburg, PA – The Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority (HRA) & HBG Economic Development Director Jackie Parker is accused of bypassing the legal planning process in order to steal property in Allison Hill. Harrisburg officials violated the Urban Redevelopment Act of PA.

In a letter sent to Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority solicitor Stu Magdule, a Harrisburg resident presents the solid case against the illegal processes. It is detailed how Harrisburg City coordinated a subversion of private property rights and ownership, by using the Brownfield planning fund.

A private attorney counciling the citizen believes this could spark a grand jury investigation. The call is for the United States attorney general to intervene.

The letter was certified and sent to the following recipients:

Eric Papenfuse, Neil Grover, Bryan Davis, George Payne, Harrisburg City Council, Harrisburg Planning Commision, Dauphin County Commissioners, John DiSanto, Edward Marsico, Josh Shapiro, Jeffrey Sessions

City Council and the planning commission were sent certified copies of the letter because HRA kept them in the dark

Will the Harrisburg-Amazon deal be lost to official egos and political agendas?

By: Sean M. Guay

Harrisburg, PA – “The announcement that Amazon would build a $5 billion facility supporting 50,000 jobs immediately lit up social media. Some local citizens and officials suggested that the sprawling, for-sale Harrisburg State Hospital grounds off Cameron Street would be a perfect fit.” – theBurg

However, varying political agendas almost squashed the deal before it gained traction. An essential component of the proposal requires cooperation between Harrisburg Mayor and the president of the Regional Chamber, among other opposing forces.

David Black, president of Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and CREDC initially said: “Harrisburg is too small to put in a bid, but I do think there’s an opportunity to put in a bid with partners in York and Lancaster.”

Harrisburg City Councilman Westburn Majors expressed motivation to engage local government and private entities together in this process. “It is my hope that the administration can work with the county, the commonwealth, local business groups such as the Chamber, CREDC, etc., to determine if putting in an application is something that they would consider,” Majors said.

Brandon Flood and Beau Brown, who are both active in local & state politics, also engaged in the social media conversation. Brown expressed deep interest and insight into the potential Amazon deal, and began drafting preliminary concepts for a proposal in front of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Meanwhile, Bruce P Weber (HBG City Director of Finance) who is very active on social media, often echos the perspective of Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse. The tone of Weber seemed to brush off the Amazon deal as a no-go.

Jennie Jenkins makes an excellent point that preparing and proposing to Amazon executives would serve as a terrific protocol for organizing forces in Harrisburg, and potentially bringing future investment to the region.

Beau Brown flips the script on Weber when he compares former Harrisburg Mayor Steve Reed to the short-falls of the current administration. The City of Harrisburg was transformed under Mayor Steve Reed. He had an unmatched love for Harrisburg and equal drive & determination to get results.

img_2071

A bold proposal was made by Beau Brown, who offered free services to help draw 50,000 Amazon jobs to Harrisburg. Brown published an advertisement for his proposal stating that in fact Harrisburg can fulfill the requirements, and the posting was circulated around on social media.

img_2049
Perhaps Harrisburg leaders and CREDC heard the calls of the community, because within 2 weeks, a new twist to the story was reported by Pennlive on 9/25/2017 when David Black says: “We’re pulling apart the RFP Amazon issued to see what we need.”

Harrisburg will partner with Lancaster, York, Cumberland & Lebanon counties to fulfill the metro requirement of the RFP.

Brown says that this is an opportunity to get face-time and build rapport for Harrisburg in front of one of the most powerful corporate owners in the world. Also, this experience will serve as excellent practice for pitching our region to investors. He also makes the point that proposing to Bezos would only be to the potential benefit of Harrisburg and the entire region. We should not pass up such an opportunity, as we are negotiating with an unpredictable entrepreneur, not a legislative body with strict rules to follow.

img_2050-1

Beau Brown is uniquely qualified. He has a Reed-like drive and passion for the City of Harrisburg. Brown’s advocacy for the city is evident through the multiple published reports and editorials that have appeared in the Central Penn Business Journal, including this following article where Brown lays out a road map plan to land a deal such as the Amazon headquarters.

If Harrisburg and regional leaders are serious about this huge proposal, Brown’s negotiating and real estate experience should be utilized in making this deal.

Here, in a rare moment of clarity, Weber comes to his senses and recognizes the brilliance and potential in Brown’s proposal:

Corruption & The Millenial Mindset

Harrisburg, PA – Where can you can get a 1st place Participation-Trophy for coming in 5th place?

Why Harrisburg City Council of course.

By a majority margin last night, HBG City council members selected a 5th place race candidate, who the insiders contend was NOT selected due to their financial payback.

The biggest and proudest voter for Madsen came from a council member that not only is a local Antifa supporter and anarchist sympathizer, but also someone who has deep financial ties to Madsen.

Whbg20 photo credit

Council woman Shamaine Daniels who recently fought openly in a disrespectful manner with council president Wanda Williams, has financial ties to Madsen’s 2017 unsuccessful campaign run.

Did Shamaine cast her vote for the best candidate, or was this yet another example of back door maneuvering?

Today there will be a vote at the Dauphin County Democratic Committee for the next nominee, and Dan Miller is expected to push for a parliamentary procedure that changes the rules for the vote.

Dan is in favor of Madsen.

Also of note:

Madsen has financial ties to the campaigns of council members Wanda Williams & Ben Allatt who also voted for Madsen on Tuesday, as well as Dan Miller and the Pianka Family who has been trying to regain it’s once dominant political power.

Dave Madsen out collecting signatures with Ben

The biggest question now is:

What will Madsen have to do in return for these favors?

Update: theBurg publishes an alternative perspective – Also in last nights vote, it was alleged that Councilman Cornelius Johnson takes orders from the mayor. Johnson nominated Ostella. Per theBurg magazine, Mayor Papenfuse texted a council member regarding who he would support.

“Know Your Rights” forum may provide stage for AntiFA leader to spew Anti-Police rhetoric

Posted by Chris Siennick following violent AntiFA clashes with Police in Harrisburg on June 10, 2017

As reported by Newsweek, AntiFA is now considered a Domestic Terrorist Organization by the FBI and DHS:

In Harrisburg, PA, local city leaders have organized a forum to spread awareness for citizens to “Know Your Rights.” The panelist include a great cast of folks, other than one name that stands apart from the rest. This individual is a known AntiFA leader and has spewed Anti-Police rhetoric throughout town. Chris Siennick advises criminals how to manipulate law enforcement officers, and the criminal justice system.

This forum will be held in Harrisburg on September 27:

Those protests were organized by Siennick and resulted in a police horse being stabbed with a flag pole, and police being sprayed with skin irritant chemicals.

It prompted Police in Harrisburg to request an additional $65,000 for riot gear:

Siennick is proud to admit that he is a paid agitator:

Siennick’s closest associates are anti-government extremist:

Host of the Harrisburg Hope event, Brandon Flood claims that no side show will take place under his watch. He also cites Siennick’s victim mentality going into this forum, and mentions that this list of panelist “may be augmented by one or two folks.”

Here is a collection of recent anti-Police rhetoric, more violent references will be released over time:

Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, PA:
The Union Rediscovered

Serving as the largest Federal Civil War base, Camp Curtin housed and trained over 300,000 troops, transported supplies to the front lines, operated a hospital, and prisoners-of-war jail. In the end, this encampment supported the Union victory in the American Civil War.

To celebrate the importance of its role in our National history, Harrisburg leaders will partner with the Civil War Museum to deem the original boundaries of this encampment as Hallowed Grounds, to procure funding to redevelop the Uptown Harrisburg Camp Curtin neighborhood, and to promote Central PA as a Civil War history tourist destination.

The goals of this project include:

  • To educate the community about Civil War history, as recorded and preserved by various institutions and resources.
  • To present vexillology (study of flags), the chronological military records and experiences of Union Civil War units raised at Camp Curtin, and their members roles as instruments in the Union victory in the Civil War.

Camp Curtin
  1. The project is to obtain these goals by replicating and displaying reproduction battle flags of the regiments that trained at Camp Curtin. This is to be a part of a community beautification initiative and subsequent public campaign to recognize the contributions and deeds of the Union soldiers in the Civil War. The project will sustain itself through the sale of reproduced flags, magnets, and ornaments to the general public.
  2. An online educational component will illustrate the activities, campaigns, engagements, and fully-detailed rosters of each regiment that trained at Camp Curtin. The service of these regiments is to be fully described-amid interactive photographs of the original battle flags. This project will require collaboration with reference materials and historians to ensure the full accuracy of compiled research. This dynamic soldier inventory is to provide the biographies, and service records for all soldiers that served in regiments that trained at Camp Curtin.
  3. As an in-kind gesture of outreach from the Harrisburg community to the Pennsylvanian, and other Northern towns where Camp Curtin Union Army regiments originated, a ceremonial visit will be made to every town to present the replicated battle flag of that towns Union Army regiment.
